After years of travelling to photograph weddings across India, we can say honestly that this country still surprises us. Every destination has a visual character so distinct that the same couple photographed in Jaisalmer versus Alleppey would produce photographs that look like they belong to entirely different stories. That is the extraordinary gift of destination wedding photography in India. The location does not just provide a background. It becomes a character in the story itself.
What follows is not a list of the most expensive venues or the most Instagrammed locations. These are the places that continue to produce images we are genuinely proud of, and the reasons why.
Rajasthan: Where Architecture Becomes a Co-Photographer
There is no part of India that photographs quite like Rajasthan. The sandstone palette of the old city walls in Jaisalmer, the deep blue of the houses climbing the hill below Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, the rose pink of Jaipur at golden hour, the extraordinary mirror of Pichola Lake in Udaipur at sunset. The first thing you notice about the light in Kerala is how soft it is. The moisture in the air from the coast and the backwaters diffuses sunlight in a way that flatters faces beautifully almost regardless of the time of day. For a photographer, that is an enormous advantage. In most of India, midday light requires active management to avoid harsh shadows. In Kerala, even midday has a gentler quality that allows more flexibility in the shooting day.
The backwater locations around Alleppey and Kumarakom offer something no other part of India can quite replicate. Goa and the Coromandel Coast: When the Ocean Does the Work
Beach weddings have a reputation for being generic but the best coastal locations in India are anything but. Goa particularly rewards couples who are willing to move away from the obvious resort pool and into the older parts of the landscape: the Portuguese churches, the worn colonial facades in Fountain has, the wild and less photographed beaches in the far north. These locations give Goa an architectural depth that pure beach photography does not offer.
The timing of coastal light is critical. The ocean reflects a large amount of ambient light, which makes beach photography particularly sensitive to the time of day. Early mornings and the hour before sunset produce colours at the coast that midday cannot approach. The single most important practical advice for destination wedding photography is to build more time into your day than you think you will need. Travel between venues takes longer than maps suggest. A wedding day with generous time built into every transition produces far better photography than a tightly scheduled one where we are always running.
